Pondering Productivity
I’ve been staring at a blank screen for about an hour now. A rather dubious start for a column that is supposed to introduce a newsletter that focuses on productivity, of all things.
But at least I am staring at a computer screen—not a blank paper page. While there might not be all that much that I can do to get the creative process going, I know that this little machine sitting right here in front of me will help me quickly turn my ideas (once they finally start to flow) into a finished work of art (well, at least into a serviceable column) quickly and efficiently.
Therein, actually, lies the beauty of technology. The computer—as a writing tool—really can’t do the writing for you, but it sure can turn writing into a more enjoyable and productive experience. Just think of all the steps that have been eliminated. There’s no more scratching out, scribbling notes, cutting and pasting.
And, alas, this mind wandering has led to my light-bulb-going-off moment: Similarly, physician practices like yours need to look at the office and decide where technology can make a difference. Sure, there are all kinds of complicated technologies out there. Instead of struggling with those complicated systems, though, you can start taking advantage of technology by zeroing in on one productivity juggernaut at a time. For example: How about figuring out a means to better handle the influx of telephone calls that you receive at your practice day in and day out? Maybe online communications systems could be the answer for you—according to practice administrators at Rush Medical Center and to health care productivity experts.(CAN WE ADD THIS SOMEWHERE? Patients of course overwhelmingly want this as well.)
So, take a few minutes and peruse this newsletter. I know you’ll walk away with a few ideas about productivity.
And, then: Get back to work!
